MUKA – a retro boomer shooter set in 1986

Experience the story of a Czech who did his compulsory military service in Czechoslovakia and went to supervise a reactor test. Search the reactor. Try to save it. Then run.

MUKA is a retro boomer shooter built like the dark PC shooters of the late 1990s. Fast, grim and mean. Low light, loud guns, levels that hide things from you, and violence that stays on the floor. The light is raytraced.

About the game

Save it.
Then run.

They sent him to Chernobyl to watch one reactor test. The test goes wrong. Reactor four is open. He has to go in, search what is left of it, and try to save it. The people on site will not let him.

When he cannot, he runs. Home is west, in Bohemia. The levels take him through Czechoslovakia and Ukraine, and further than either of them.

Key features

Key features

Guns with names

Real Czechoslovak weapons, and the ones that only exist here. Pistol vz. 52, submachine gun vz. 25, grenade URG vz. 86, long shotgun ZP 49. Then Florián, Mlýnek, Křižík, Rys, Paprsek P-1, Bobby and Kašpárek. The names stay Czech.

Key features

Gas masks & mutants

Soldiers, liquidators, dogs, rats and spiders, all changed by the glittering fallout. They hide behind pillars and they shout before they shoot.

Key features

Blood that flows

Chunky crimson splatters that run, pool and dry. Step in it and you leave tracks – or slip. Every fight leaves the room looking like a crime scene.

Key features

Smash the propaganda

Portraits, banners, loudspeakers playing marches. Everything breaks, and every level keeps count of what you smashed.

Key features

Beer heals

A bottle of beer from Plzeň patches you up. It does nothing for the radiation. You drink it anyway.

Key features

Secrets in the walls

Hidden rooms, cracked walls only an explosion opens, and an atomic bomb in the corner of a platform. Look twice before you leave.

Bosses

There are
a lot of them

Bosses run all through the campaign. Not one fight at the end of the game. A lot of them, and none of them steps aside.

The campaign is the story. Around it sit a lot of minigames, and Overtime, where hordes of enemies come at you and do not stop.
